Uncover 400 Years of History at Binham Priory March 13, 2025 |
Uncover 400 Years of History at Binham Priory Good Afternoon,
Here’s your chance to step into the world of medieval monks at Binham Priory, a Norman Benedictine site that has witnessed over 400 years of history. Founded in 1091, this architectural marvel (and it is!) took 150 years to construct and now stands as a testament to Norfolk's rich historical past. The priory's church, a blend of Norman and Early English styles, boasts some unique features that will definitely captivate you. Stand in awe as you take a look at the distinctive arch on the north side and the intricate masonry work on the exterior pillars. It’s also worth going inside the church to see the three-tiered arched windows and elaborately carved pews. Despite its grand appearance, Binham Priory housed just 14 monks before Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. Today, the well-preserved ruins and still-active Priory Church offer a glimpse into monastic life. Located near the North Norfolk Coast, this English Heritage site has informative boards which will guide you through the priory's layout, making it an enjoyable few hours for you. Check out more on Binham Priory here. Best wishes, Suzy P.S.
